Profile
Vicarious Surgical is a pioneering medical technology company developing next-generation single-port robotic surgical systems. Founded in 2014 and headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts, the company aims to revolutionize minimally invasive surgery by combining miniaturized robotics, advanced computer vision, and virtual reality (VR) technology. Its core innovation is a system that virtually transports the surgeon inside the patient through a single small incision, offering enhanced visualization, precision, and control compared to traditional multi-port robotic systems like the da Vinci platform. Vicarious Surgical went public via SPAC in 2021 (NYSE: RBOT) and has received FDA Breakthrough Device Designation for its system.
The company’s technology addresses key limitations in current robotic surgery: large incisions, limited range of motion, external arm collisions, and high costs. By using a dramatically smaller access point, Vicarious Surgical seeks to reduce complications, speed up recovery, lower costs, and make robotic surgery more accessible to a broader range of hospitals and patients.
Key Robot-Based Product:
Vicarious Surgical System — The company’s flagship platform consists of three main components:
- Patient Cart: A compact, mobile unit that inserts a camera and two robotic instruments through a single 1.5 cm incision (approximately the size of a dime). All robotic motion occurs inside the patient, eliminating external robotic arms and reducing collision risks.
- Surgeon Console: Features immersive 3D stereoscopic visualization and proprietary hand controllers that translate the surgeon’s natural upper-body movements (shoulders, elbows, wrists) into precise robotic actions. The system provides 360° visibility and highly responsive control.
- Advanced Instrumentation: Each robotic arm includes up to 28 sensors, enabling human-like dexterity and freedom of movement in all directions (including backward). The design supports complex abdominal procedures with exceptional precision and maneuverability.
The system is initially targeted at abdominal procedures such as hernia repair, gallbladder removal, and other general surgeries. It is currently in advanced development and testing phases, with ongoing work toward regulatory clearance and commercialization. Vicarious Surgical continues to refine its technology through iterative prototypes (Beta 2 and beyond) while building manufacturing and clinical partnerships.
