Profile
Moon Surgical is a French-American medical robotics company founded in 2020 (originally as MastOR) with offices in Paris, France, and San Francisco, California. The company is dedicated to democratizing robotic assistance in the operating room by developing simple, affordable, and highly integrable robotic systems for laparoscopic (minimally invasive) surgery. Moon Surgical’s mission is to build sustainable, efficient, and digitalized operating rooms that empower surgeons, reduce physical strain, improve ergonomics, and expand access to robotic assistance for high-volume soft-tissue procedures. The company has received strong investor backing (including Johnson & Johnson Innovation) and has achieved significant regulatory milestones, including multiple FDA 510(k) clearances and CE Mark approval.
Moon Surgical’s flagship product is the Maestro™ Platform, a novel category of collaborative robotic surgical assistant. Unlike traditional large robotic systems, Maestro is designed as a compact, two-armed assistant that works alongside the surgeon using standard laparoscopic instruments.
Key Features of the Maestro System:
- Collaborative Design: The robot provides an extra set of “hands” to hold and manipulate tissues or instruments, allowing the surgeon to focus on the primary task with greater control and ergonomics.
- Intuitive Operation: Surgeons can quickly learn and use the system, with a short learning curve (often same-day training to first procedure).
- Instrument Compatibility: Works with a wide range of standard 5mm and 10mm off-the-shelf laparoscopic instruments and scopes, preserving surgeon preference and reducing costs.
- ScoPilot™: An AI-enhanced intraoperative assistance feature (powered by NVIDIA Holoscan) that provides intelligent control and actionable insights.
- Digitalized OR: Integrates into existing workflows, supports data collection, and contributes to a more efficient, sustainable operating room environment.
The Maestro System has been used in over 200 patients (as of early 2025 reports) and is expanding into new indications such as gynecological surgery. It has been deployed in both hospital and ambulatory surgery center (ASC) settings, demonstrating strong usability and clinical value. Moon Surgical continues to advance its Physical AI capabilities through partnerships with NVIDIA and focuses on making robotic assistance accessible to a broader range of surgeons and facilities.
