Profile
Markforged is a Massachusetts-based industrial additive manufacturing company that develops a complete, cloud-connected platform for producing strong, functional parts using composite and metal 3D printing technology. Founded in 2013 and headquartered in Waltham (with manufacturing in Billerica), Markforged has built the Digital Forge ecosystem that integrates hardware, software, and materials to enable manufacturers to print production-ready components directly on the factory floor or in the field.
The company’s robot-based products are limited; its focus is on industrial 3D printers rather than robotic systems. The hardware lineup includes the FX10 (a versatile system capable of both composite and metal printing), the Metal X System for accessible metal additive manufacturing, the FX20 for high-temperature ULTEM parts, the X7 and Mark Two for continuous fiber-reinforced composites, and the Onyx Pro for professional-grade printing. These printers use proprietary materials such as Onyx (nylon reinforced with chopped carbon fiber) and continuous fiber options including carbon fiber, fiberglass, Kevlar, and high-temperature fiberglass to produce parts with aluminum-level strength.
The Digital Forge software platform (powered by Eiger) provides AI-driven simulation, inspection, security, and fleet management, allowing secure, traceable production across global operations. Markforged serves defense, aerospace, automotive, energy, and general manufacturing customers who use the systems for end-of-arm tooling, fixtures, functional prototypes, and low-volume production parts. The platform emphasizes ease of use (“just press print”), high reliability in industrial environments, and distributed manufacturing capabilities that reduce lead times and supply-chain dependencies.
