Profile
Marathon Targets is a pioneering defense technology company founded in 2007 and headquartered in Marrickville, Sydney, Australia. The company specializes in the design, manufacture, and operation of advanced autonomous robotic targets for realistic live-fire tactical training. Marathon Targets addresses a critical gap in military and law enforcement training: the lack of realistic moving, thinking, and reactive opposing forces (OPFOR) during live-fire exercises. By deploying AI-driven, armored robotic humanoids that look, move, behave, and react like real people, the company transforms static marksmanship drills into dynamic decision-making exercises under stress. Since deploying the world’s first autonomous tactical training robots in 2008, Marathon Targets has accumulated an impressive track record including over 20,000 training events, 200,000+ miles of autonomous operation under fire, and more than 20,000,000 rounds fired. Its systems are in service with major customers on four continents, including the US Marine Corps, US Army, US Navy, US Air Force, Canadian Forces, Australian Defence Force, UAE Presidential Guard, Slovenian Army, Bundeswehr, Poland’s Territorial Defense Force, and many others. Over 90% of new product features originate from direct customer feedback, underscoring the company’s strong end-user focus. Marathon Targets offers two primary business models: outright purchase of systems or Training-as-a-Service (TaaS), which is preferred by most clients because it is funded through annual operations and maintenance budgets, includes full sustainability support, upgrades, veteran robot operators, and eliminates the need for customers to manage spare parts or inventory.
Marathon Targets’ robot-based products form a comprehensive, interoperable family of intelligent autonomous robotic targets optimized for outdoor field ranges, urban environments, indoor shoot houses, and every climate from Arctic to desert. All platforms share the same command-and-control interface, communication systems, and reactive behavior engine, allowing a single operator to safely control dozens of robots simultaneously—even beyond line of sight. The core technology is precision autonomous navigation, collision avoidance, and a patented reactive behavior system based on user-created scenarios. Robots communicate with each other to create realistic tactical environments, self-organize (scattering for cover when one is hit or launching coordinated counterattacks), and never stray outside designated movement boxes.
The product line includes outdoor rugged 4×4 wheeled robots capable of traversing grass, mud, rocks, sand, snow, and light vegetation, as well as dedicated indoor variants for shoot houses and multi-level buildings. Vehicle-based robotic targets are also available. All models feature realistic 3D human-like mannequins with multi-spectral signatures (visual muzzle flash simulation, active thermal signatures for night training, and acoustic effects including screams, yells, and language-specific cursing). When hit, robots exhibit lifelike reactions: flinching and groaning when wounded, shrieking and collapsing when “killed,” with separate hit zones that can simulate body armor. The systems support multiple training modes including Live Fire Robotic OPFOR, Robotic Blue Force for overhead fires and restricted fire lines, Robotic Role Players for pattern-of-life training, simulated munitions with UTM/SESAMS, robotic laser engagement (MILES/MCTIS), Live-Virtual-Constructive (LVC) integration, test and evaluation, and conventional static/pop-up/moving target emulation.
A flagship innovation is Zero Infrastructure Range Modernization (ZIRM), which allows any open field or existing range to be converted into a state-of-the-art tactical training facility in hours rather than years, delivering massive cost avoidance while tripling lethality in a single training day according to user evaluations. Robots are armored for repeated live-fire hits, operate day and night in all weather, and provide stress inoculation that soldiers and law enforcement report feels genuinely frightening—exactly the desired training outcome. With scalability to large formations, full autonomy, reactive behaviors, realistic reactions, and comprehensive support from combat-experienced veteran operators, Marathon Targets delivers the most realistic live-fire training systems available today and continues to expand its global reach and technological leadership.
