Profile
Lume Robotics is a Brazilian autonomous mobility company founded in 2019 in Vitória, Espírito Santo. It emerged from the renowned IARA Project (Intelligent Autonomous Robotic Automobile) at the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES), which achieved a historic 74 km autonomous drive in real traffic conditions in 2017. The company develops a complete Lume Autonomous Mobility System — a full-stack hardware and software platform that transforms conventional vehicles into fully autonomous (Level 4) systems without requiring a human driver.
Lume’s technology is designed for real-world industrial and commercial applications, particularly in challenging environments such as mining, steel plants, ports, and corporate campuses. The system integrates advanced perception, localization, planning, and control subsystems to enable safe, reliable autonomous operation.
Core Technology – Lume Autonomous Mobility System
The platform consists of five main interconnected subsystems:
- Localization and Mapping: Uses LiDAR, Radar, IMU, GPS RTK, cameras, and vehicle odometry to create and update real-time maps while precisely locating the vehicle.
- Perception: Provides 360° environmental awareness, detecting pedestrians, vehicles, animals, potholes, traffic lights, signs, and other elements.
- Navigation: Handles route planning, motion planning, and direct control of acceleration, braking, and steering actuators.
- Decision-Making: Manages complex behaviors such as obeying traffic rules, yielding, parking, and emergency maneuvers.
- Operations Center: A remote monitoring interface for mission assignment, real-time fleet tracking, status updates, and teleoperation when needed.
Key Robot-Based / Autonomous Vehicle Applications:
- ASTRU — Autonomous semi-trailer truck for internal logistics in industrial plants.
- MARTA — Autonomous mining truck (Mercedes-Benz Arocs).
- BRAVO — Autonomous minibus (Marcopolo Volare) for corporate campuses.
- ART — Autonomous water truck for road humidification (partnership with Vale).
- Multimover — Ultra-heavy autonomous transporter for liquid pig iron in steel plants.
- AEBox — Autonomous electric utility vehicle for small loads.
- Autonomous aircraft taxiing system (in partnership with Embraer).
Lume Robotics offers a complete turnkey solution that can be embedded in various vehicle types, delivering significant benefits including up to 94% accident reduction, 75% labor cost savings, and improved operational efficiency. The company continues to expand its portfolio of Level 4 autonomous solutions for Brazil’s industrial and mining sectors.
