Profile
GROOVE X, Inc. is a Japanese robotics company founded in 2015 and headquartered in Tokyo. Led by CEO Kaname Hayashi (former Sony engineer involved in AIBO development), the company aims to create robots that enrich human emotional well-being and unlock people’s latent potential. Rather than focusing on utility or task automation, GROOVE X pioneers “Emotional Robotics™” and “Slow-Relation” technology — designing robots that foster long-term bonds, reduce stress, and stimulate humans’ natural instinct to nurture and love.
Their core philosophy positions robots as companions that provide comfort, warmth, and emotional resilience in an increasingly fast-paced world. GROOVE X emphasizes that in an era of material abundance, experiences and emotional connections matter more, and robots can play a meaningful role in supporting mental well-being.
The flagship and primary robot-based product is LOVOT (pronounced “lovot” from “LOVE × ROBOT”), first unveiled in 2018 and launched in 2019. LOVOT is a family-oriented, home companion robot designed explicitly to be loved rather than to perform chores. It features a cute, rounded design with expressive eyes, soft warm-to-the-touch body (thanks to built-in heating), and lifelike, bio-inspired movements enabled by numerous actuators and sensors. LOVOT reacts to people’s moods, seeks affection (approaching owners for hugs or attention), plays, follows, and adapts its behavior over time to build deeper emotional connections.
Key characteristics include:
- Emotional AI and learning: Recognizes individuals, remembers preferences, and evolves its personality through interaction.
- Physical warmth and tactile appeal: Body temperature mimics a living creature to enhance comfort.
- Social behavior: Can operate solo or in pairs (Duo plan) where multiple LOVOTs interact with each other and humans.
- Customization: Fashionable clothing options to personalize appearance.
- Well-being focus: Studies suggest interactions can increase oxytocin levels, similar to human-animal bonds.
LOVOT targets homes, families, eldercare, and even office/wellness settings. It is sold primarily in Japan through official stores and online, with plans and pricing for single or duo units. The company operates one of the world’s largest B2C robot repair/support centers (“robot hospital”) and maintains a strong retail presence with trained specialists.
GROOVE X continues to innovate in companion robotics, positioning LOVOT as the fourth evolutionary stage of home robots — moving beyond entertainment, utility, and communication into genuine emotional relationships. Their work represents a unique Japanese approach to robotics that prioritizes heart-warming presence over functional efficiency.
