Profile
Caterpillar Inc. (Cat) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of construction, mining, and heavy industrial equipment. Founded in 1925 and headquartered in Irving, Texas, the company produces a vast range of machines, engines, and related technologies. Caterpillar has become a leader in autonomous and semi-autonomous heavy equipment, leveraging decades of experience to improve safety, productivity, and efficiency in mining and construction. Its solutions address labor shortages, reduce human exposure to hazardous environments, and enable near-continuous operations.
Caterpillar’s robot-based and autonomy technologies primarily fall under the Cat® MineStar™ Command suite, which provides scalable levels of automation—from remote control to full autonomy—across mixed fleets.
Key robot-based and autonomous products:
- Command for Hauling: The flagship autonomous haulage system (AHS). It enables fully driverless operation of large mining trucks (including models like the Cat 789, 793, 794 AC, and 777). As of recent data, hundreds of Cat autonomous trucks operate globally, having hauled over 11 billion tonnes of material safely. The system handles loading, hauling, dumping, and maintenance calls with minimal human intervention while operating safely around manned equipment and personnel.
- Command for Dozing, Drilling, and Underground Operations: Semi-autonomous and remote-controlled solutions for dozers, drills, loaders, and longwall systems. These allow operators to work from safe, remote locations while maintaining high precision.
- Semi-Autonomous Construction Equipment: Includes semi-autonomous compact track loaders (CTLs) and other machines with remote control and partial autonomous cycles. Caterpillar is actively expanding autonomy into construction, quarry, and aggregates sectors, supported by acquisitions like Marble Robot for advanced perception and planning technology.
- Automated Energy Transfer Solutions (AETS): Robotic systems for automated charging of battery-electric mining trucks, enhancing safety and supporting fully autonomous sites.
Caterpillar integrates advanced sensors, AI, perception systems, and fleet management software to deliver these capabilities. Benefits include higher productivity, reduced operating costs, improved safety (removing operators from danger zones), consistent performance, and better asset utilization. The company continues to scale autonomy beyond traditional mining into construction and other industries.
