Profile
Built Robotics is a San Francisco-based construction robotics company founded in 2016 by Noah Ready-Campbell and Andrew Liang. The company develops AI-powered autonomy systems that transform standard heavy construction equipment into intelligent, semi-autonomous robots. Its mission is to build “robots that build the world” by making construction safer, faster, and more cost-effective, with a strong current focus on the rapidly growing utility-scale solar industry. Built Robotics has raised over $114 million in funding and has completed more than 25 commercial deployments across the United States and Australia, accumulating tens of thousands of safe operational hours.
Rather than building entirely new machines from scratch, Built equips existing excavators, dozers, and pile drivers with proprietary AI guidance, perception, and control systems. This approach allows contractors to retain familiar equipment while gaining autonomous capabilities for repetitive, labor-intensive tasks. The company emphasizes collaboration between robots and skilled human operators, including training partnerships with unions like the International Union of Operating Engineers.
Key robot-based products for solar construction:
- RPD 35 (Robot Pile Driver): An AI-powered material handling and piling solution. It can carry up to 224 piles with a maximum payload of 34,000 pounds, eliminating manual pile shakeout. It supports piles up to 19 feet long in various cross-sections (W6×7 to W8×28).
- RPS 25 (Robot Pile Setter/Driver): Works in tandem with the RPD 35. It uses advanced guidance (including laser rangefinders) to position and drive piles with high precision — within 1.0° from plumb and 15 mm of design elevation. The system enables coordinated fleet operations running up to 24 hours per day.
These solutions form the world’s first AI-powered piling system for utility-scale solar farms. Built’s technology has also been applied to trenching (over 100 miles excavated), grading, and earlier projects such as wind turbine foundations. All systems feature an 8-layer safety architecture that exceeds industry standards, keeping operators out of high-risk zones while maintaining productivity.
Built Robotics positions itself at the intersection of Silicon Valley AI expertise and real-world construction knowledge. Its solutions address critical workforce shortages and the massive demand for renewable energy infrastructure. By automating dangerous and repetitive tasks, the company helps contractors scale production, reduce costs, improve safety, and accelerate the clean energy transition.
