Profile
1X Technologies (also known as 1X) is a Norwegian-American AI and robotics company headquartered in Palo Alto, California, with manufacturing operations in Hayward, California, and Moss, Norway. Originally founded in 2014 as Halodi Robotics by CEO Bernt Øyvind Børnich, the company rebranded and shifted focus to developing safe, general-purpose humanoid robots designed for home and industrial environments. Its mission is to create an abundant supply of labor through intelligent robots that handle dull, dirty, or dangerous tasks, enabling humans to focus on more meaningful activities and building a more abundant society.
1X emphasizes safety, human-like dexterity, and advanced embodied AI. Its robots feature soft, organically-inspired mechanics, advanced tactile sensing, and continuous learning capabilities. The company operates America’s first vertically integrated high-volume humanoid robot factory in Hayward and uses proprietary AI models like Redwood AI (a vision-language-action model) for task learning and adaptation.
Key robot-based products:
- NEO (Home Robot): The flagship consumer humanoid designed for everyday household chores and personalized assistance. NEO operates autonomously by default and learns new tasks through demonstration or remote guidance by 1X Experts. It features a built-in large language model for natural conversation, the 1X NEO Cortex computing platform (based on NVIDIA Jetson Thor), quiet operation (~22dB), and continuous AI-based adaptation. Customers can currently place a $200 deposit to pre-order. NEO is positioned as a friendly, safe companion that integrates seamlessly into home life.
- EVE (Industrial/Enterprise Version): An earlier and more mature humanoid platform initially developed for industrial, logistics, security, and medical environments. EVE can perform tasks such as patrolling, material handling, and supporting human workers with strength, precision, and sensor data. It serves as a foundation for enterprise deployments and further technology development.
1X focuses on real-world testing, safety-first design, and scalable production. The company is rapidly expanding (over 100 open roles) and aims to deploy humanoids that continuously improve through real-world experience and data. It combines advanced hardware with generalist AI to create versatile platforms suitable for both home and work environments.
