Profile
Compressorhead is an artistic robotics project created by Berlin-based artist Frank Barnes and collaborators. Launched around 2013, it is widely known as the world’s first all-robot heavy metal/punk rock band. The project combines engineering, recycled industrial parts, and music performance into a unique entertainment and robotics demonstration concept. While not a traditional commercial robotics company, Robocross Machines (the entity behind the project) builds and maintains these impressive robotic musicians.
The “band” consists of six robots made primarily from recycled parts, each playing real instruments with mechanical precision:
- Fingers – Lead guitarist with highly dexterous robotic hands.
- Bones – Bass guitarist.
- Stickboy – Drummer with powerful, coordinated arm movements.
- Junior – Rhythm guitarist.
- Mega-Wattson – Keyboardist / additional instruments.
- Hellgå Tarr – Vocals (with mechanical head and mouth movements).
All robots are controlled via a MIDI sequencer and use a combination of pneumatics, servomotors, and custom mechanics to play instruments with impressive speed and accuracy. The project has performed live at major events, including a notable GE-hosted concert in New York City, and released music such as the album Party Machine. Compressorhead demonstrates advanced robotic synchronization, timing, and physical interaction with musical instruments.
The project serves both as entertainment and a showcase of creative robotics engineering. It highlights how recycled materials and industrial automation components can be repurposed into complex, expressive robotic systems. While the band was most active between 2013–2019, videos and content continue to circulate widely on YouTube.
