Profile
Airbus is a global leader in the aerospace and defence industry, headquartered in Blagnac near Toulouse, France, with a workforce of approximately 157,000 employees across more than 180 locations in 160 nationalities. Founded in 1970 as a European consortium to challenge American dominance in commercial aviation, the company has grown into a multinational corporation that designs, manufactures, and delivers commercial aircraft, helicopters, military aircraft, and space systems. Its core mission is to pioneer sustainable aerospace for a safe and united world, with a strong emphasis on innovation, digital transformation, and environmental responsibility. Airbus operates through three main divisions: Commercial Aircraft (including the iconic A320 and A350 families), Helicopters, and Defence and Space. The company maintains a significant global presence, with major manufacturing sites in France, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States, and China. Recent financial performance in Q1 2026 showed resilience despite delivery challenges and engine supply issues, with a continued focus on production ramp-up and defence sector growth.
A key aspect of Airbus’s modernisation strategy is its investment in robotics and automation to support aircraft production ramp-up. Through its dedicated Airbus Robotics unit (established in 2023), the company develops customised, human-centric robotic solutions tailored for aerospace manufacturing. These systems target repetitive and physically demanding tasks in five key areas: assembly, painting, quality control, logistics, and composites. Rather than replacing workers, the robots handle monotonous operations so employees can focus on complex, high-value activities that require human skill and judgment. This approach also creates new roles in robot management and programming.
Notable robot-based products include the Medium-Sized Drilling Robot (MSDR), Airbus’s first fully in-house developed robot, engineered to be three times smaller than standard industrial models for easy integration into existing assembly lines. It delivers superior accuracy and agility for drilling operations on the A320 Family. The Flextrack drilling robot uses flexible or stiff rails that wrap around aircraft fuselages, enabling modular, mobile drilling systems. In cabin production, the lightweight four-kilogramme CabinMarker robot automates the precise marking of seat positions, reducing task time from 150 minutes to just 30 minutes while improving ergonomics and reducing rework. Airbus Robotics also operates a facility in Mukilteo, Washington, focused on portable robotic equipment for drilling, fastening, and assembly. Additional innovations include potential future applications such as automated corrosion detection and floor-rail cleaning. These robotic advancements are central to Airbus’s Industry 4.0 transformation, leveraging AI and mobility to boost quality, speed, and worker safety across global production sites.
