Profile
Blue Origin is a privately held aerospace company founded in 2000 by Jeff Bezos with the mission of building a road to space for the benefit of Earth. Headquartered in Kent, Washington, the company focuses on developing reusable launch vehicles, orbital systems, and lunar infrastructure that dramatically reduce the cost of access to space while enabling long-term human presence beyond Earth.
Blue Origin’s core programs include the suborbital New Shepard rocket for commercial space tourism, the heavy-lift New Glenn orbital launch vehicle powered by the BE-4 engine, and the Blue Moon family of lunar landers. The company also produces reusable rocket engines and in-space mobility systems. A key part of its portfolio stems from the 2023 acquisition of Honeybee Robotics, which now operates as Blue Origin’s Honeybee Robotics division.
Blue Origin’s robot-based products are centered on high-reliability space robotics through Honeybee Robotics. The Motion Control line provides actuators, dampers, custom mechanisms, biaxial gimbals, multi-axis motor controllers, specialized electronics, power and signal transfer devices, and optical encoders. These components power solar array drive assemblies and other precision spacecraft systems.
The Exploration Systems division develops end-to-end robotic solutions for planetary environments, including 4-degree-of-freedom robotic arms for drilling, scooping, and lunar construction, 3-degree-of-freedom arms for terrestrial and extraterrestrial sampling, planetary rovers with autonomous navigation, and advanced drilling and sampling systems such as the TRIDENT drill and PlanetVac. The division also builds mobility platforms, gas sensors, spectrometers, deployment structures, and in-situ resource utilization equipment for extracting water and other lunar resources. A 100 kg class Honeybee rover is scheduled to fly in 2028. All avionics and software are developed in-house for extreme environments, with flight heritage dating back to Mars operations in 2004.
