Profile
Bristol Robotics Laboratory is the United Kingdom’s leading academic centre for multi-disciplinary robotics research. It operates as a collaborative partnership between the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) and the University of Bristol, bringing together more than 450 academics, researchers, and industry practitioners. The laboratory occupies over 4,600 square metres of state-of-the-art facilities at UWE Bristol’s Frenchay Campus and serves as an internationally recognised Centre of Excellence in robotics.
The primary mission of Bristol Robotics Laboratory is to advance the science, engineering, and social understanding of robotics and embedded intelligence. Its research emphasises adaptive robotics that can safely interact with people, operate in unstructured and uncertain environments, and perform flexible roles. Core research themes include human-robot interaction, safe and collaborative robotics, biomimetic tactile sensors and haptics, intelligent autonomous systems, soft robotics, swarming behaviour, machine vision, non-linear control, medical and rehabilitation robotics, unmanned aerial vehicles, and assisted living technologies.
Bristol Robotics Laboratory conducts extensive national and international projects spanning smart automation, bio-energy systems, driverless cars, verification and validation of robotic systems, and unconventional computation. It supports industry through its BRL Technology Solutions programme, which includes a Technology Business Incubator, the Robotics Innovation Facility (RIF), and services that help companies translate research into commercial applications. The laboratory also delivers doctoral training via the EPSRC-funded Centres for Doctoral Training in Robotics and Autonomous Systems and Future Autonomous and Robotic Systems (FARSCOPE), along with undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
Facilities include mechanical workshops, rapid prototyping, wet labs, a 16,000-litre test pool, flying arenas, Vicon motion-capture systems, and an ambient assisted living studio. These resources enable cutting-edge experimentation in robot-based technologies across service robotics, industrial automation, healthcare, and defence applications.
Bristol Robotics Laboratory positions the UK as a global leader in advanced robotics by combining world-class academic research with strong industry engagement and entrepreneurial support.
