Profile
Lobster Robotics is a Dutch high-tech startup (founded around 2021 by Stephan Rutten and fellow students from Delft University of Technology) specializing in compact, autonomous underwater drones for high-resolution optical seabed mapping. Based in The Hague, the company addresses a major gap in marine surveying: the need for affordable, scalable, high-quality visual data of the ocean floor to support exploration, monitoring, environmental protection, infrastructure inspection, and defense applications. Traditional methods often rely on large vessels, work-class ROVs, or divers, which are expensive, slow, and limited in scope—especially in shallower or complex environments. Lobster’s solutions make seabed insights accessible at scale with minimal logistical burden.
The flagship product is the Lobster Scout (including models like Scout 3), a hand-portable, fully integrated autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) weighing approximately 46 kg with a total system weight that fits in standard transport cases. It is designed for rapid deployment (15 minutes) from shore, small boats (RHIB, Zodiac), or vessels of opportunity, without requiring heavy cranes or specialized spreads. Key capabilities include:
- High-resolution optical imaging: Produces georeferenced optical mosaics and 3D models compatible with GIS platforms, delivering detailed visual data far superior to traditional sonar for many applications.
- Performance specs: Up to 1,000–6,000 m² per hour mapping rate, 12 hours of operation per charge, operation in murky water, strong currents, depths from 2m to 300m, and uneven terrain.
- Autonomy and usability: Pre-set mission planning, consistent altitude/speed/lighting for repeatable surveys, in-field processing (results in 5–10 minutes), and autonomous operation that frees the crew for other tasks.
- Output: High-quality, measurable, georeferenced data for analysis, AI-assisted habitat classification, change detection, and time-series monitoring.
Civilian applications include benthic habitat studies, environmental monitoring and consenting surveys, pipeline/cable route inspections, scour protection checks, and scientific research. It enables affordable, repeatable large-area surveys that complement targeted tools like dropcams or ROVs. The company offers flexible models: short-term rentals (with optional certified operators and remote support), longer-term rentals, and outright purchase with training, maintenance packages, and software subscriptions.
Military/defense applications are in development, with interest from NATO partners and the Dutch Navy for remote seabed inspections and object identification. The dual-use nature (civilian-to-military adaptations) positions Lobster as a versatile player in maritime security.
With over 1,200 hours in water, 340+ km surveyed across 8 countries, and strong backing (including YES!Delft incubator), Lobster Robotics emphasizes simplicity, reliability, and real-world deployability. Their technology lowers costs dramatically, reduces carbon footprints, and democratizes access to critical seabed data in support of blue economy growth, sustainability, and defense needs.
