Profile
Skild AI is a Pittsburgh-based AI and robotics company founded in 2023 by former Carnegie Mellon University professors Deepak Pathak and Abhinav Gupta. The company is building what it describes as the world’s first general-purpose, omni-bodied foundation model for robotics — a single unified “brain” capable of controlling any robot for any task. Rather than developing narrow, task-specific models or hardware, Skild focuses on creating scalable, adaptable intelligence that can be retrofitted across diverse robotic platforms and environments. This approach aims to solve one of the biggest barriers in robotics: the lack of generalizable intelligence that works reliably in unstructured, real-world settings.
Skild’s core technology is a unified robotics foundation model trained on massive multimodal datasets (including web videos and robot trajectories). The model learns general physical understanding — motion, physics, grasping, navigation, and task abstraction — and can adapt to new robots and tasks with minimal additional training. This “omni-bodied” design allows the same brain to power wheeled robots, legged robots, manipulators, or hybrid systems. The company emphasizes real-world grounding through practical applications rather than purely theoretical research.
Key robot-based applications and platforms include:
- Security/Inspection Robot Platform: Robots navigate unstructured, dangerous environments (e.g., industrial sites, disaster zones) to perform autonomous inspections, reducing human risk. The AI handles complex navigation, anomaly detection, and reporting.
- Mobile Manipulation Platform: The model executes low-level skills such as grasping, handover, and navigation on mobile platforms. These skills are abstracted via APIs, allowing developers to build higher-level applications without managing low-level details.
- Autonomous Packing: High-precision, dexterous manipulation for repetitive packing tasks in logistics and fulfillment centers. The system handles irregular objects and adapts to variability in real time.
Skild AI has raised substantial funding (including a $300M round in 2024 and a $1.4B round in 2026, reaching a $14B+ valuation) and has acquired Zebra Technologies’ robotics automation business. The company is backed by prominent investors including SoftBank, NVIDIA, Amazon, and Jeff Bezos. It continues to expand its model capabilities and real-world deployments, positioning itself at the forefront of Physical AI development.
