Profile
Ocado Intelligent Automation (OIA) is the enterprise automation division of the Ocado Group, a UK-based technology company. OIA commercializes the advanced warehouse automation technologies that Ocado has developed and refined over more than 20 years while operating one of the world’s most efficient online grocery businesses. The company provides complete, end-to-end intelligent automation solutions for retailers, 3PLs, manufacturers, and other industries seeking to modernize their fulfillment and supply chain operations. With a strong focus on scalability, flexibility, and long-term performance, OIA helps customers achieve higher throughput, better space utilization, lower operating costs, and greater resilience in the face of labor shortages and e-commerce growth.
OIA’s solutions are built around proven, battle-tested robotic technologies originally developed for Ocado’s own high-volume grocery fulfillment centers.
Key Robot-Based Products and Systems:
- Ocado Storage and Retrieval System (OSRS): The flagship high-density, high-throughput automated warehouse solution. It uses thousands of autonomous storage and retrieval robots (often called “bots”) that travel on a 3D aluminum grid above stacked inventory totes. The system is highly efficient, self-optimizing, and capable of handling massive order volumes with exceptional speed and accuracy.
- Ocado Mobile Robot System (OMRS): A flexible AMR-based solution for lower-to-medium throughput environments. These autonomous mobile robots provide greater layout flexibility and easier deployment compared to fixed-grid systems.
- OCADEX Robotic Arms: Advanced AI-powered robotic picking arms capable of handling individual items (“eaches”), cases, and pallets. These use sophisticated computer vision, reinforcement learning, and behavioral cloning to pick a wide variety of products with high reliability, even from chaotic bins or mixed pallets.
- SynQ Software Platform: A comprehensive warehouse execution and control system that orchestrates robots, humans, and other automation technologies in real time. It includes advanced optimization, predictive analytics, and digital twin capabilities.
OIA’s systems are modular and scalable, allowing customers to start with a pilot and expand as needed. They require relatively low infrastructure investment compared to traditional automation and can be installed in both new and existing facilities. The company has delivered solutions to major retailers and logistics providers globally, demonstrating strong performance in grocery, general merchandise, pharmaceuticals, and other sectors. By combining world-class robotics with intelligent software and deep operational expertise, Ocado Intelligent Automation is helping organizations build the next generation of efficient, sustainable, and future-ready warehouses.
